Your CV

The first point we need to make is that you are an individual, and any CV you produce will essentially be an individual CV because it relates directly to you. Do need to go a step further though; it also needs to be unique to each sales job you apply for.

Think about what your CV is, it is an advertisement of what you have to offer to potential employers. Think about it this way. If you were buying a car what would be important to you?

Please read the following five statements and think about which one appeals to you the most in the context of choosing a new car.

"Whether you’re faced with town driving or winding country roads, the **** provides great road-holding through its totally revised suspension system."

"Deep front sport seats are designed to hold the driver and front passenger firmly whilst cornering."

"The concept of safety is fundamental to the **** philosophy, so it’s not surprising the **** achieves a five star NCAP safety rating."

"The V6 unit produces 320 Nm of torque at just 2,800 rpm and is capable of a top speed of 155 mph."

"Thanks to the high quality materials and construction, it’s reassuring to know that the ****’s galvanised bodywork is covered against rusting through from the inside by an impressive 12-year warranty."

As you may have guessed they are all about the same car, the VW Golf. Although it is the same car, the things that influence an individual purchase differ between each buyer. It is the same in recruitment. Applications to different companies for different sales roles should be treated in the same way. They will all have different needs and you will need to sell yourself to them focussing on your strengths in relation to their unique needs.

Your sales CV should be one that you have tailored to each application ensuring you are highlighting the skills, knowledge, experience and achievements you have that are particularly relevant to that employer and that role.
